May 2016 Branch Meeting report

A packed agenda for the assembled members at the Golden Lion Hotel. The night had wide-ranging discussions from Candidate Selection Process, to National Council, Stirling Council to Europe, and all points in between.

Branch business: Our convener informed branch that he had attended the party’s manifesto launch at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre, had been manning the Saturday stall in town, and had attended the May branch meeting of Dunblane Branch. He also commented on the successful all-nighter for the election results which took place in the The Burgh Coffeehouse where branch activists celebrated the victory of Bruce Crawford with an increased majority of over 1,000. Well done to everyone in the Branch who had helped, from chapping doors, getting the vote out, stuffing envelopes, contributing funds  and getting involved. A hard-working and successful campaign.

Some discussion was had on the agenda for National council and getting resolutions adopted by National Council. Political Education will be covering this aspect of Branch life in the future.

We then had our election of Branch Vice Convener, one of the candidates withdrew and Morag Fulton was elected by acclaim and will sit as VC until the AGM in September. Congratulations to Morag.

We then had a short talk by Grant Thoms on trying for selection as a candidate and making sure applications are completed correctly, candidates are properly prepared and ready to represent the party. As the council elections are next year it is hoped that many of our female members in particular will be throwing their collective hats in the ring to stand as councillors and this discussion was useful to that end.

Alyn Smith MEP

Alyn Smith MEP, talking to branch members.

We then had a visit from great friend of the Branch Alyn Smith MEP who came to spend some more time discussing the pending EU IN/OUT referendum and why it is critical the public are motivated to come out on polling day. Alyn in conjunction with fellow MEP’s has prepared a great wee guide to what the EU does for us and what withdrawal would mean called “The BlEU Book”. Some copies were left with the branch but you can get yours from his website either as a book or see it simply online in PDF format.

The book is a great resource for getting informed and understanding the real issues around EU membership and is full of verified and referenced resources to back up the arguments made.

The next branch meeting is on Wednesday 8th June 2016.
