Responding to the UK Government’s Brexit Statement after the Supreme Court’s decision on Parliament’s role in triggering Article 50, Stirling MP Steven Paterson warned the Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union – David Davis – that ignoring the Scottish Government’s comprehensive plan to protect Scotland’s interests would be “tantamount to political cowardice.”
Mr Paterson joined a number of MPs in urging the Brexit Secretary to publish a White Paper, detailing the UK Government’s plans for exiting the EU.
Mr Davis responded by stating that he had never been accused of cowardice before.
Commenting, Steven Paterson said:
“In 2014, Scots were promised a ‘family of nations’ relationship with the rest of the UK – each nation with an equal say. This is clearly not the case as, despite voting overwhelmingly to remain in the EU, Scotland now faces a Hard Brexit that it didn’t want and doesn’t deserve.
“The UK Government must produce a detailed White Paper at the earliest opportunity with plans to protect Scotland’s access to the European Single Market. Not doing would be a shameful display and an insult to the people of Scotland – including the vast majority of my constituents.”
