Stirling MSP Praises Local Miners’ Strike Book Launch at Smith Museum

Bruce Crawford MSP and Dr Jim Phillips

Stirling MSP Bruce Crawford attended the official launch of a new book on the Cowie miners’ strikes in the 1980’s at the Stirling Smith Art Gallery and Museum on Friday.

Cowie Miners, Polmaise Colliery and the 1984-85 Miners’ Strike is a compilation of pieces of literature, produced at the time of the strikes and is a historical account of the industrial action taken by local miners from the Stirling area. It has been put together by Dr Jim Phillips, Senior Lecturer in Economic and Social History at the University of Glasgow.

The book is available at The Smith for just £6.

Commenting, Bruce Crawford said:

“This is a fantastic account of the Cowie Miners’ strike in the mid-80s which is an incredibly important event for communities in the eastern villages and across the Stirling area.

“I am delighted that this historical account has been compiled to keep this heritage alive and it was great to have a chat with Dr Jim Phillips about its importance.”
