Stirling MP Alyn Smith has joined a cross-party campaign from parties in all 4 UK nations, calling for the implementation of a Recovery Universal Basic Income.
In a letter to the UK Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak, a broad range of MPs and Lords have highlighted the looming economic shock as to why a UBI is necessary to protect businesses and livelihoods.
With public support for the concept topping 84% in recent polling, the time has come to create a proper, fit-for-purpose financial safety net, and a springboard for recovery.

“Universal Basic Income is an idea which finds support from all corners, all walks of life, and all political stripes. It has the potential to transform the lives of everyone in our society, establish an income floor that no-one can fall through – and crucially, support the economic recovery we’ll sorely need in the weeks and months to come.
I’ve been contacted by many constituents and businesses in Stirling, who are worried current support schemes will cease just as they are needed most. When the time comes to ease restrictions, many individuals, families and businesses will need time to take stock and find their feet again.
We need a sustainable support system that gets us through these unprecedented times. UBI means everyone benefits, any administration can be streamlined and more efficient, and spending can support our economic recovery.
I call upon the Chancellor, and the wider UK Government, to engage with these cross-party proposals in good faith.
