Labour and Tories Offering Status Quo of Decline and Despair
Alyn Smith, SNP candidate for Stirling and Strathallan in the upcoming Westminster election, urged young people to believe a better future is possible – as Keir Starmer and Rishi Sunak continue to offer the same route to decline and despair.
Labour have repeatedly signed up to Tory cuts, spending commitments and values – including rejecting an offer from the EU for a youth mobility scheme for those aged between 18-30.
In sharp contrast, the SNP Scottish Government has continued to promote the rights of children and young people, including:
- Free Bus Travel for Under 22s
- Free Tuition Fees
- Giving Children the Best Start with the Baby Box
- Extending the Scrappage of Peak Train Fares
- 1,140 Hours of Funded Early Learning and Childcare a Year
- Fighting for Scotland’s Return to the European Union

‘Children and young people are the future of Scotland – and they deserve something better than is on offer from Labour and the Tories. Both offer a status quo that is frankly unacceptable. More cuts. More austerity. More decline – and more misery. The UK really is the Sick Man of Europe, with terrible economic growth and the albatross of Brexit hanging over everyone.
‘Only the SNP will put children and young people across Stirling and Scotland at the heart of our nation’s future. We’ll defend their rights – even when the UK Government takes us to the Supreme Court for doing so. And more importantly, we offer hope that a better future is possible. That politics can work again, that our democratic values will help steer us through the collective challenges we face. That independence in Europe will put rocket boosters on economic growth, on job prospects and building a better Scotland.
