Stirling MP and MSP Back Talks on World Cycling Tournament

‘2022 Can Be Stirling’s Year to Shine’

Local politicians Alyn Smith MP and Evelyn Tweed MSP have welcomed talks between Stirling Council and international sport organisers, in a bid for Stirling to host events as part of the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships

The international tournament comes to Glasgow in 2023, with competitions across a whole range of cycling disciplines – from track and road, to mountain and para-cycling and many more. Hosting parts of this major international sporting tournament would reinforce Stirling’s growing reputation for culture, tourism and sport.

The talks form part of a wider strategy currently underway by Stirling Council, Scene Stirling and a team of public, private and third-sector partners, who together have formulated a bid for City of Culture 2025 – the winner will be announced in spring 2022. Previous title-holders include the cities of Hull and Coventry.

Alyn Smith MP said:

‘I’m extremely proud of the hard work Stirling Council and others are carrying out to showcase Stirling on the international stage. Our culture and tourism sectors are absolutely fantastic, and I couldn’t think of a better place to host world-class sport competitions than right here in Stirling. I heartily back these cycling event talks, and our bid for City of Culture 2025 – I firmly believe 2022 will be Stirling’s year to shine.’

Evelyn Tweed MSP said:

‘Stirling has a rich history of hosting brilliant festivals, tournaments and competitions, and I warmly welcome recent talks with the event organisers of the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships. The bidding process for City of Culture 2025 really has unleashed a positive energy across key partnerships in Stirling, encouraging collaboration and creativity like never before. Despite the continuing difficulties of the pandemic, these plans are a vote of confidence in our collective future – that we can celebrate Stirling as a modern, outward looking and thriving city and community.’
