Iconic Steamship Back in Action
Local MP Alyn Smith was delighted to board a sailing of the newly refurbished Sir Walter Scott Steamship across Loch Katrine, after the £750,000 refurbishment of the ship’s engine system, boilers and interior.
Originally constructed in Denny’s of Dumbarton yard in 1899, the ship was transported to Loch Katrine in sections before reassembly. Joined by James Fraser, CEO and Trustee of the Steamship Trust, as well as Lynsey Eckford, newly appointed Regional Director for Ayrshire and Forth Valley at VisitScotland, Mr Smith took in the beautiful sights of Loch Katrine – joining captain Ken Henderson at the helm itself.
Greeted back to shore by sea dog Maverick, passengers retired to the fantastic lochside cafe for refreshments before resuming their exploration of the surrounding landscapes.

‘The restoration of the Sir Walter Scott steamship has been an odyssey in itself, and James and his team deserve full credit for what they’ve managed to pull off here on the shores of Loch Katrine. The steamship, along with the sister vessels the Rob Roy II and Lady of the Lake, have remained diligent anchors for the broader tourism industry – for Stirling, the wider Forth Valley area, and for Scotland.
‘I wish James and team every success in their future endeavours, including the repair of the Roderick Dhu path, and constructing a lookout-tower and viewing platform on the very spot where famous Scottish writer and poet, Walter Scott composed his epic work ‘Lady of the Lake’ – long credited as kickstarting Scotland’s tourism industry. It will be a fitting legacy for both Walter and indeed James, two figures who have done so much for Scotland’s tourism industry.’
