USING STIRLING’S ROADS TO TRANSPORT NUCLEAR BOMBS UNACCEPTABLE
Stirling MP Alyn Smith has responded to recent revelations that
convoys carrying nuclear weapons and radioactive materials for the Ministry of
Defence have suffered 40 safety lapses in recent years.
A Freedom of Information request revealed that since 2014, there have been 40
operational and engineering issues on convoys carrying nuclear bombs and
hazardous radioactive materials.
The FOI revealed that the convoys which ferry Trident weapons have suffered 40
safety incidents, including problems caused by poor maintenance – with the SNP
warning that MoD complacency whilst transporting nuclear bombs could be
catastrophic.
Trident nuclear convoys frequently pass through Stirling
communities.
Alyn Smith MP said:
“Trident nuclear convoys are a frequent and unwelcome sight passing through
Stirling communities, and many local people will be seriously concerned to
learn of recent safety lapses that such convoys have experienced across the
country.
“The nuclear weapon cargo on board these convoys is extremely dangerous, and no level of protection is ever enough, particularly when they are being transported through quiet residential towns and villages, like those across the Stirling area.
“It is unacceptable that Scotland is forced to house these
weapons of mass destruction, but such lapses in safety procedures means
that local areas and people are being put at risk.“This revelation
underlines why this relic of the cold war should be abolished entirely.”
