Commenting on the Chancellor’s Spring Budget, Evelyn Tweed MSP for Stirling said: “The UK Tory Government could have used this Spring Statement to help people pay their bills and put food on the table. Instead, they’ve chosen to turn their backs on some of the most vulnerable in society, some of whom are genuinely having to choose between heating and eating.
“This cost of living crisis is a very real and grim reality for many in Stirling, you only have to look at the numbers of people relying on food banks to get a sense of just how hard this is hitting families and children. We must demand more from the UK Government, and call them out for what is a blatant failure during a time of national crisis.”
Alyn Smith MP said: “Charities, thinktanks and households begged Rishi Sunak to use his Spring Statement to help relieve some of the economic pain many are experiencing. Instead, he’s abdicated his role as steward of the national economy and left vulnerable families to fend for themselves. The cost-of-living crisis will have a clear and tangible price as misery is heaped on top of misery. Snap polling has already suggested ¾ of Scots polled think announcements made by the Chancellor have not done enough to help.
“And with the Resolution Foundation predicting absolute poverty will rise by 1.3 million people in the UK in 2022-2023, it’s no wonder many people across Stirling feel absolutely left behind by this Tory UK Government. Rishi Sunak has failed to meet the moment – and it’s my constituents and millions of others across these islands who’ll suffer due to his callousness.”
