SNP Demand Full Restoration
The ongoing saga around the untimely destruction of the Christie Clock continued last week, as Stirling Tory Councillor Rachel Nunn questioned the merits of rebuilding the destroyed monument as soon as possible; decried the potential costs for reinstatement – and suggested a potentially cheaper solution might be to reconstruct it using wood.
The comments were made at Thursday’s Council meeting (5th October) to the disbelief of fellow Councillors, and follows a disastrous attempt to make safe the listed structure situated where King’s Park Road meets Melville Terrace. Tragically the botched restoration job resulted in the Clock’s destruction, much to the anger and surprise of local residents.
Stirling SNP Council Group Leader Scott Farmer said the comments showed the splits amongst the Tory party on the issue:
‘I have to hand it to the Tories, they certainly know how to turn a fiasco into a farce. It was clear from the minute of the Christie Clock’s destruction there would be backpedalling on its full restoration from some quarters, but I didn’t expect the aptly-named Conservatives to be leading the charge.
‘Tory Leader Neil Benny would do better to keep his group discussions firmly on Stirling’s heritage and the residents we serve – rather than second-guessing our shared priority of repairing the beloved Christie Clock. Stirling Council should see through a full-repair and replacement.’
